Basics of When and How to Claim Social Security

Retirement, Medicare and Social Security

Thinking about - or planning your retirement? Here are some things to consider...

Decide when to start Social Security - You can apply up to four (4) months before you want your retirement benefits to start. For example, if you turn 62 on December 2nd, you can start your benefits as early as December. If you want your benefits to start in December, you can apply in August. You may apply using the online application at www.socialsecurity.gov or call 1.800.772.1213. Click on "Basics of When and How to Claim Social Security" to the left of this screen.

Sign up for Medicare - Generally, if you have not already started receiving retirement benefits, you will want to sign up for Medicare three (3) months before turning age 65 - UNLESS you have group health coverage through Trident or a spouse's plan. Need further guidance? Amy Johnson is a Medicare Specialist who can guide you through your Medicare options, assist you with enrollment, and help you secure Medicare coverage. She can be reached by email at Amy.Johnson@mybenefitadvisor.com, by phone at 1.707.779.1061 or visit her website at mybenefitadvisor.com/medicare-ae/amy-johnson.

Check your 401k and other long term retirement savings plans - A quick conversation with a retirement specialist could make a big difference. Trident Seafoods provides complimentary, one-on-one retirement planning help from Fidelity Investments. Log into your Trident 401k at www.netbenefits.com or call 1.800.603.4015
